Case Offers Tips To Combat Summer Home Energy Costs

Case Design/Remodeling, Inc., the nation's largest full service remodeling company has developed some helpful recommendations for homeowners to keep their energy costs down. With home cooling serving as the largest energy expense this summer, window maintenance is an important factor in controlling air loss and gain.

Case recommends that homeowners thoroughly check their windows for signs of rotted and damaged wood, cracked glass or missing putty. If the windows are in good shape, it is more cost-effective to boost their efficiency by adding weather-stripping or caulking.  In addition, window replacement is also an alternative option. Although more expensive than repairs, it offers homeowners the leverage to pick from an abundance of new energy efficient products on the market.

Case Design/Remodeling, Inc. President Mark Richardson, CR, stated that "Your choice of appliances also greatly affects home energy cost." The average U.S. household pays $1,200 per year in energy cost from appliances. Richardson says, "Homeowners can sharply reduce their bills by using energy efficient appliances and space conditioning equipment, which feature efficiency ratings. These ratings are good indicators of energy use. The higher the efficiency rating, the lower the operating cost."

Insulation is also a key factor in your home's primary defense against air loss during the summer. A foot of fiberglass or cellulose insulation in the attic floor is recommended as a cost-effective measure. Case recommends that homeowners have a home repair specialist conduct an annual energy audit to determine where air is being lost. A home repair specialist can pinpoint problems in the home and provide the appropriate recommendations. At the same time, they can check your HVAC system for maximum efficiency. Richardson says, "The cost of any energy improvements depend greatly on where you live; how large your air conditioning requirements are; and how much you pay for energy in Ontario."
